Natalie’s experience with her son Marcellus began at the NICU at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, where he was born prematurely and immediately faced a series of life-threatening health issues, including necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a severe intestinal infection. Over the next few months, Marcellus endured multiple surgeries, including an intestinal blockage correction and the reattachment of his intestines, all while showing remarkable strength and resilience. For Natalie, navigating this emotional rollercoaster as a first-time mother at 42 was overwhelming, but she found solace in small victories like her son’s first smile. The NICU staff’s advice to “take it one day at a time” became her guiding mantra.

A crucial part of Natalie’s journey was discovering the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Elmhurst. Initially unaware of its existence, Natalie was introduced to the space by her mother and staff, and it quickly became a sanctuary during Marcellus’ hospital stay. The Family Room provided more than a place to rest; it was a source of emotional support, offering a break from the constant stress of the NICU. Simple acts of kindness, like a hot meal from the staff or holiday gifts to maintain family traditions, made a world of difference for Natalie. Recently, at a NICU alumni event, Natalie and Marcellus returned to the Family Room, now as a thriving, healthy baby, to reconnect with staff and families, celebrating their journey and the community that supported them along the way.

Emanuel’s story highlights his family’s battle with pediatric cancer and the support they found at Ronald McDonald House New York (RMH-NY). Originally from Paraguay, Emanuel was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, which led his family to seek advanced treatment in New York after initial treatments in Paraguay were unsuccessful. At RMH-NY, they found not only temporary housing but a comforting community, helping them focus on Emanuel’s health.

Despite a difficult journey, including Emanuel’s leg amputation, the family remained resilient and grateful for the care and support provided. RMH-NY became a crucial part of their healing process, offering them emotional, logistical, and economic assistance. Emanuel’s upbeat spirit, even in the face of adversity, has been a source of inspiration. His family has shared their gratitude for the volunteers, donors, and the RMH-NY community, which made their journey a little easier.

Ronald McDonald House New York (RMH-NY) hosted its 32nd Annual Gala on October 17, 2024, at Pier Sixty, commemorating 45 years of supporting families facing pediatric cancer and other serious illnesses. The event gathered hundreds of attendees to celebrate the progress made since RMH-NY’s founding and raised critical funds for advancing health equity and providing care and support services to families that need it most. A highlight of the evening was five-year-old Zoey, a cancer survivor, who rang a symbolic bell on stage to mark the end of her treatment. Zoey also performed an emotional rendition of “The Climb,” symbolizing the resilience of all families served by RMH-NY.

The evening, hosted by Emmy Award-winning news anchor Cheryl Wills, featured engaging activities, a silent auction, and live performances by Broadway Inspirational Voices. The gala honored Dr. Mitchell Katz of NYC Health + Hospitals and Michael McElroy of Howard University for their commitment to RMH-NY’s mission. The funds raised will help RMH-NY continue offering critical programs, from temporary housing to wellness services, supporting families from New York City, across the U.S., and around the world.

RMH-NY held its annual Block Party on September 21st, and no one embraced the fun quite like 9-year-old Oliver. Oliver became the star of the event, rating bouncy castles with impressive precision, exploring every fun station, and bringing laughter to everyone around. With his older brother Octavio by his side, they captured the essence of the day, showcasing the joy that RMH-NY strives to bring to families in the midst of their challenges.

Oliver’s journey to the RMH-NY started when his family relocated from the Dominican Republic to seek treatment for his cancer. Separated from his father, who stayed behind to support them financially, Oliver, his mom, and Octavio found comfort and community at RMH-NY. The House has provided them with a place to stay, emotional support, and, most importantly, moments of joy that lighten the heavy burden of illness.

During the Block Party, Oliver turned into a roving reporter, conducting interviews and ensuring every activity was met with his signature humor and wit. From slime-making to meeting therapy dogs and a Darth Vader impersonator, he embodied the spirit of RMH-NY—one that combines resilience with joy, even during the hardest times.
