Ronald McDonald House New York (RMH-NY) has long been a sanctuary for families facing pediatric cancer, providing comfort, care, and support. Over the years, RMH-NY has expanded its mission to include families dealing with rare diseases, recognizing the similar needs and challenges they face. Rare Disease Day, February 28th, served as a timely reminder of RMH-NY’s commitment to all children with serious illnesses, ensuring they and their families have access to the support and community necessary during their medical journeys.
The expansion to accommodate rare diseases was a deliberate move by RMH-NY, driven by the increasing requests from medical professionals to support families outside the realm of oncology. This initiative, combined with a pandemic-era plan for growth, has allowed RMH-NY to serve more families than ever before. Notably, RMH-NY’s adaptation during the COVID-19 pandemic led to significant organizational growth, including new Family Rooms and an expanded Community Health team, thus increasing its capacity to help families in need.
Rare Disease Day plays a critical role in raising awareness for the millions worldwide living with rare diseases. RMH-NY celebrated this day by highlighting the strength of these children and their families and advocating for continued medical advancements. The day is not only about raising awareness but also about fostering action and support, ensuring that families like those at RMH-NY are recognized and supported in their unique challenges.

We recently had an unforgettable day filled with fun and excitement, thanks to the incredible generosity of our partners and friends. A special shoutout to James Marsden, Paramount, and Allied Global for hosting an advanced screening of Sonic 3 for our families. Our kids and their families enjoyed a magical cinema experience alongside their favorite characters—Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, and Tails!
Thanks to Tenth and Pike for supplying delicious treats and snack boxes that brought smiles and joy. The event wouldn't have been possible without the superb organization by MDC Productions.
