Ronald McDonald Family Room Snapshot: Viviana, Victor, and Family

Masked behind the bustling corridors of NYC Health + Hospitals Elmhurst, beyond the whirlwind of loved ones with their anxious finger-biting and nervous pacing, sits a quiet sanctuary available to all families who have children admitted to the hospital’s NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) or PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) – the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Elmhurst. Here, despite the challenges of their journey, families find respite, support, and moments of tranquility.

Crafting Moments of Joy

For Viviana, her husband, brother, and son Victor, the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Elmhurst became a sanctuary during their week-long stay. Despite the brevity of their visit, they formed a profound connection with the family room and its offerings. From shared meals to crafting activities, from engaging in games to simply resting and watching television, every moment within the room was imbued with laughter and comfort.

Viviana’s second boy Victor, in particular, reveled in exploring every corner of the Family Room. His infectious energy infused the space as he enthusiastically immersed himself in the various crafts, toys, and games available. A highlight was his playful interaction with Luna, the therapy dog, whose presence brought boundless joy to his heart.

A Family’s Journey of Strength

Viviana's recounting of their journey revealed a story of resilience and enduring love. Originating from Venezuela and currently residing in a shelter, they faced daily challenges. However, faced with adversity, the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Elmhurst served as a place of genuine comfort and true kindness toward the family.

Despite the two-hour journey from Brooklyn to the hospital each day, Victor's anticipation of visiting his baby brother in the NICU was palpable. The familiar surroundings of the Family Room offered him a sense of security and belonging, momentarily alleviating his worries.

A Token of Appreciation

As their hospital stay neared its end, Viviana expressed profound gratitude for the support they received. In a heartfelt gesture, she shared her sentiments in a survey, describing the Family Room as a "magical haven" where worries dissipate, and peace prevails. Her words echoed the sentiments of countless families who found solace within its walls.
