Through her vision and leadership, the House has grown beyond its original hospitality model into a comprehensive health equity partner, ensuring families receive both comfort and critical resources during one of the most challenging times of their lives. Her leadership has been marked not just by expansion and modernization, but by a commitment to making RMH-NY a true champion of health equity and community impact.
Expanding the House’s Reach Across New York City
When Dr. Browne assumed leadership, one of her first initiatives was to expand RMH-NY’s reach to families across all five boroughs of New York City and serve as a pillar of support to NYC families. Under her guidance, the House became a true citywide resource, accessible to thousands more families who need it. By reframing RMH-NY as a healthcare partner, she positioned the organization as an integral part of the continuum of care for children facing serious illness. This shift was not only about physical shelter but about addressing the broader social determinants of health and providing a supportive environment that could help improve outcomes for children and families.
Transforming the Physical Space to Meet Families’ Needs
Her vision also included a major physical expansion and modernization of the facility itself. Under her leadership, the House completed a multi-million capital project that transformed its East 73rd Street building. The expansion increased capacity to 95 guestrooms, added six post-transplant suites designed with full amenities such as kitchens, laundry facilities, and handicap accessibility, and introduced new spaces such as a wellness center and outdoor terrace. These improvements were not just about capacity; they were about creating spaces where families could truly feel at home while undergoing some of the most stressful experiences of their lives.
Building for the Future Without Interrupting Care
In 2025, Dr. Browne launched another significant renovation project to modernize and reconfigure communal areas, enhancing both comfort and functionality. These renovations were carefully planned to ensure the House could remain fully operational during construction, reflecting her deep commitment to never interrupting the care and support families rely on.
Extending Support Beyond the Walls of the House
Beyond the physical walls of the House, Dr. Browne has been instrumental in expanding RMH-NY’s programs and outreach. She championed the creation of hospital-based Family Rooms in the NYC community, which provide parents and caregivers a place of respite within medical centers, ensuring they remain close to their child’s bedside while still having access to basic comforts.
Building a Network of Care Through Strategic Partnerships
Dr. Browne’s tenure has also been marked by the cultivation of deep and wide-ranging partnerships. Today, RMH-NY works with more than 30 hospital and healthcare partners and is backed by over 80 corporate partners, 500 major donors and a volunteer force of over 250 people. These collaborations have enabled the House to extend its services far beyond what would be possible alone, embedding RMH-NY within a network of care that supports families across the entire city.
Advancing Health Equity Through Action and Investment
Central to Dr. Browne’s leadership is her unwavering commitment to health equity. Recognizing that families dealing with serious pediatric illness often face not only medical challenges but also systemic inequities, she has championed initiatives that directly addressed these gaps. The expansion of RMH-NY’s services across New York City began with a $1 million grant from the Cabrini Health Foundation, which seeded the outreach programs.
Scaling Impact Through Transformational Support
To continue this work, a milestone achievement came with securing a $1.05 million grant from the RBC Foundation to expand the Health Equity Program. With RBC Foundation USA’s support, 35,000 services were provided to 15,000 medically complex children and families. By integrating data, partnerships, and community outreach, Dr. Browne has ensured RMH-NY is proactive in shaping a healthier future for vulnerable families.

In partnership with the Board of Directors and staff, and through her dedication, innovation, and unwavering focus on families, Dr. Ruth C. Browne has transformed Ronald McDonald House New York into more than just a temporary home for families, it has become a beacon of home, hope, and healing. Thousands of children and caregivers benefit each year from the programs, facilities, and support systems she has put in place. Her legacy is one of reimagining what a community resource can be, expanding the boundaries of care, and ensuring that every family who walks through the House’s doors feels not only welcome, but supported in a circle of care.
