Navigating a child’s cancer treatment can be complicated and frightening. When kids and their families travel to New York for care from far away, they can quickly find themselves lost in a whirlwind of appointments and new information — all while trying to process the fear and sadness that come with the diagnosis. Suddenly in uncharted territory and an unfamiliar city, their lives are turned upside-down.
Our navigation program warmly welcomes first-time visitors to New York. We start by giving them a personalized welcome and gift bag when they arrive. Families may receive toiletries, snacks, maps of the neighborhood, museum passes, a personal medical journal, a blanket, and age-appropriate gifts for each child. These simple items go a long way toward helping them feel at home. A Ronald McDonald House host provides orientation and a tour of the House, and an escort and complimentary transportation to their first doctor’s appointment.
Our goal is to help RMH-NY families acclimate. Our concierge-like services help them focus on what’s most important: their child’s health.
