Development Grants Writer & Researcher

Summary/Objective

The Development Grants Writer and Researcher authors proposals and applies their knowledge of fundraising methods to reach income goals. Development Grants Writer and Researcher remains current with appropriate trends primarily in public health and able to research grant making institutions. They understand processes related to successful submission of proposals such as data analysis, persuasive storytelling, and evaluate impact. This position reports the Director of Major Gifts within the Development Department.

Essential Functions: 
  • Research and identify appropriate grant funding opportunities; partner with Development Department and the Director of Strategic Partnerships and other team leaders on opportunities
  • Write materials and manage the full lifecycle of grant proposals and execution
  • Coordinate with Department Heads to ensure the grants are implemented according to the operational and financial needs of the organization
  • Actively collect and analyze data across departments and conduct impact evaluation for services and programs
  • Work with Finance Department and other areas of the organization to identify funding needs and ensure proposals are not duplicative
Responsibilities:
  • Maintain proficient knowledge of organization’s history, programs, and operations, along with strategic plan.
  • Assist with the execution of Development Department's strategy
  • Support the invoicing, reporting, and other administrative functions to ensure successful execution of grant process
  • Display adherence to organization’s mission and overall business objectives
  • Analyze the budget trends and make recommendations for cost control and reduction for various grants
  • Keep the relevant staff informed about upcoming deadlines and deliverables, thereby ensuring smooth completion of work responsibilities
  • Provide detailed monthly reports to Department Heads or other senior leaders on grant progress
  • Collaborating with Marketing & Communications team to send funders newsletters, and to promote RMH-NY tours
  • Maintain records in hard copies and computer databases; maintain records of all payments and receivables and prepare monthly records for all grant related activities
  • Provide training to the new staff on grants management and reporting requirements
  • Be attentive and observant of all parts of the facility and operations to ensure a safe and secure environment for all staff and guests; report violations or concerns in a timely fashion
  • Serve as a resource for staff, families, guests, volunteers, donors and other community members
Qualifications & Competencies
  • Bachelor's degree in a Creative Writing or related field; degree in nonprofit management a plus
  • Minimum three (3) years of grant writing experience including strong project management skills
  • Proficient with measuring and reaching income goals with a strong track record of securing a minimum of five-figure grants
  • Knowledge of philanthropy landscape, trends, and sources particularly in NYC
  • Extraordinary communication skills particularly written, as well as verbal and interpersonal with an ability to communicate in a timely and appropriate fashion
  • Ability to organize complex content with strong written, reporting and presentation skills
  • Excellent attention to detail, well-organized, and ability to collect and manage qualitative and quantitative data
  • Deadline driven work-style with ability to adjust priorities, multi-task, manage time appropriately in a dynamic environment, and produce quality results on time
  • Team-oriented focus; tuned-in and engaged with the needs of the department and organization
  • Self-motivated strategic thinker with a proven record working independently and achieving results
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint); other central database platforms (e.g. Raisers’ Edge) a plus
  • Professional with the ability to garner trust and confidence of senior staff, including program leaders, board members and donors
  • Knowledge of additional language(s) a plus
