This is nine-year-old Ben Brewer. Ben and his family stay at Ronald McDonald House New York while he receives treatment for neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nerve cells. Ben was originally diagnosed with cancer before his two-year-old birthday. By the age of four, he was pronounced a survivor. Unfortunately for Ben, his cancer returned, and he and his mother ultimately came to New York City to receive a life-saving treatment using antibody therapy.
“Mom, I just really want my life back.” They were the words that Ben used to describe his frustration with having to spend so many years of his childhood battling cancer. Cancer had caused him to drop out of Cub Scouts, miss school, and many of the kids who began treatment alongside him had never made it as far in their treatment before they lost their battle.
When Ben’s birthday came around in the summer, both he and his mother were sad about the prospect of not being able to be home to celebrate it with his father and sister. With the love and support of friends and family, Ben’s birthday was made brighter when he received birthday cards from around the country.
However the biggest surprise was a birthday cake topped with his favorite Super Mario Brothers character, “Yoshi.”
Today, Ben is back in school full-time and adjusting to a new schedule.
