Hogs for Hope
By Megs DiDario, Volunteer Staff Writer
On the beautiful Sunday, April 29th morning, dozens of men and women rode their motorcycles along the Hudson River in the annual “HOGS for Hope Falls to the River Run” fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House New York. The HOGS started at Croton Gorge Park and rode to JFK Marina on the Hudson River, where the run concluded with a BBQ and pig roast celebration.
The event, an annual fundraiser favorite since 2005, was organized by Thursday night Team Leader, Jef Campion, and his friend and fellow Yonkers Fire Department colleague, Ken Geiger.
“The guys at the Yonkers Fire Department are terrific, and are involved in every aspect of the event,” says Campion.
From setting up the pig roast the night before the event to recruiting the seven bands that tirelessly kept the party going all afternoon, Campion, Geiger, and the Yonkers Fire Department pulled together another spectacular afternoon.
The event would not have been possible without the help of various volunteers and staff at Ronald McDonald House. Members of Jef’s Thursday Night volunteer team were also involved, including Michael Conti, who created the custom-printed event t-shirts that were sold to raise money for the House. The event successfully raises between $25,000-$35,000 each year.
Additionally, numerous local businesses donated food and raffle prizes. Dallas BBQ, Modern Pizzeria, Del Primo’s Pizzeria, Dinosaur BBQ, and NY Deli & Bagel donated the cuisine that was enjoyed by all.

Santa and a House Guest
Cinco de Mayo Celebrations
By Megs DiDario, Volunteer Staff Writer
The donkey pinata was bursting with prizes and the families of Ronald McDonald House New York donned colorful sombreros on Sunday, May 6th, as part of the Sunday night team's "Cinco de Mayo" fiesta at the House.
In addition to the pinata, a cactus ring-toss and sombrero-shaped target game provided lots of fun for the families, who also enjoyed the colorful margarita glasses out of which their (non-alcoholic) beverages were served.
Sunday night team co-leader, Ruth Schlossberg, organized the party. "Each member of the Sunday night team takes turns planning events each week," she says. Schlossberg has been a volunteer at the House for over eight years, and has co-chaired the Team Ronald fundraising event in previous years.
A delicious spread of Mexican cuisine was prepared by a group of Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training volunteers, who also helped serve dinner, which consisted of chicken fajitas and a caramelized banana dessert. Volunteers from the Team in Training organization generously prepare and serve meals for the families of Ronald McDonald House once a week.
The Sunday night volunteers also helped the kids with a picture frame-decorating activity, which included fiesta-themed stickers.
A special thanks to all of the volunteers of the Sunday night team for their work at the House: Lynda LaMonte-Garmong and Dana Rosenthal, who have both volunteered for over seventeen years, as well as Ruth Schlossberg, Beth Calvert, Kelly Gessner, Derek Kruger, Annamaria LaMonte, Todd Matz, Kimberly McGeever, Jen Wolosoff, Sarah Nist, and Mallika Pereira.

Friday Night Team Organizes Night of Pizza-Making Fun
By Megs DiDario, Volunteer Staff Writer
The families of Ronald McDonald House had the chance to show off their inner culinary skills on Friday, May 11th, during a night of homemade pizza-making fun, organized by the Friday night team.
With an array of choices, including spinach, pepperoni, sausage, and pineapple, there was no shortage of shapes and kinds of pizza on display. Some kids chose to even forego the cheese and go straight for the toppings.
The Friday night team, led by Team Leaders Steve Simon and Lisa Ganzenmuller, has organized “Make Your Own Pizza Night” at the House a few times, as they have found that this is one of the families’ favorite activities.
“Make Your Own Pizza Night always draws a big crowd, as the kids and parents all love to participate,” says Simon.
Simon planned the event from start to final pizza finish – even using his friend’s membership to Restaurant Depot to purchase pizza-making supplies.
Over the upcoming weeks, the Friday night team is looking forward to coordinating a night out for the families on a boat ride along the Hudson River, as well.
A special thanks to all of the volunteers of the Friday night that coordinated Pizza Night: Steve Simon, Lisa Ganzenmuller, Amy Accardi, Pat Dunne, Stephanie Koutsares, Kathleen McKenna, Dorothy Billings, Shirley Jacobs, and Lauren Marino. A special thanks to the other Friday night volunteers, as well, which includes Debra Bagosian, Nadina DiRuzzo and Lela Reynolds.

Spotlight on Temple Emanu-El Volunteers
By Megs DiDario, Volunteer Staff Writer
On Tuesday, May 15th, the families of Ronald McDonald House enjoyed a hearty chicken wing and cavatelli and broccoli dinner, served by a large team of dedicated volunteers from the Women’s Auxiliary of Temple Emanu-El.  The night, like most dinners prepared by Temple Emanu-El, was organized by Phyllis Hahn, who single-handedly cooked most of this night’s dinner, and Bunny Barb.
“We had fifteen confirmed volunteers prior to the dinner, and seventeen showed up,” says Barb.
It is no surprise to her that this many people came to the House that night, as volunteers from Temple Emanu-El have been cooking and serving dinner to the families of Ronald McDonald House every month since 1998. Temple Emanu-El has a pool of over forty volunteers that take turns coordinating dinner at the House, and many have been volunteering for over ten years.
Temple Emanu-El, located on 5th Avenue at 65th Street, not only provides dinner every month, but also funds activities for the families. On May 15th, volunteers set up a play-doh and bottled sand making station for the kids, which was definitely a big hit.
After dinner, the families of Ronald McDonald House were treated to a very special musical performance by actress and musician Jill Hennessy in the Macy's Living Room. Tuesday night team volunteer, Ken Schulman, organized the musical performance, as he currently works with Hennessy.
Hennessy, best known for her starring role in “Crossing Jordan”, performed songs for the kids and parents alike, who put in requests for everything from “Old McDonald Had a Farm” to Adele’s “Someone Like You.”
A special thanks to Temple Emanu-El for another great dinner and to Ken Schulman and the Tuesday night team for pulling together an exceptional post-dinner performance.
